For the third straight year, the cheerleaders from The Arc of Central Plains Buffaloes have taken home first-place at the Kansas Special Olympics West Regional Tournament in Plainville, KS. The cheerleaders put on an excellent performance on their way to capturing first-place.
Shortly after the results were announced and the Buffaloes were given their first-place medals and had walked off the floor, Buffaloes Volunteer Cheerleading Coach Chelsea Greenough had a big smile on her face and said, “That’s three in a row!” Greenough was quick to point out that her team could have been a little louder but was happy with her squad for grabbing first-place again.
Greenough, a former member of the Fort Hays State University cheer squad has been volunteering as the cheer coach for the Buffaloes for three years now. She said, “I started helping out when I was in college and really fell in love with it and have been doing it ever since.” When you are at a Buffaloes cheer practice, you can see the love and respect that the cheerleaders have for her.
Chelsea has also added something very special to the program. She has started having some cheerleaders from Hays High School who have asked to help join her at practices and competitions. “It’s a good opportunity for them to come and see the other side of cheer and to volunteer for a good cause.” Greenough is quick to point out that the girls that are helping her are doing so because the wanted to. The Hays High cheerleaders seem to really enjoy themselves and the athletes appear to really enjoy having them at practice.
Over the next several months and years Greenough is planning on some big changes in her life. She is planning to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership this year and is planning a move to Leoti, KS. Greenough also will be getting married in the near future. Her fiancé is from Leoti and she recently had an opportunity come up to intern for a company called Gilmore Solutions, who is based out of Sterling, KS and will be opening a new location in Garden City.
Over the last three years Greenough has been a big reason the Buffaloes have had a big cheerleading team. The Buffaloes had the largest single squad at the regional tournament last weekend. Greenough’s time with the Buffaloes is sure to be treasured by members of the current and previous teams. She will be missed when she leaves, but her time with the Buffaloes will always be appreciated.
